Isle of Wight Coastal Erosion and Flood Risk Management Business Cases

We are developing Business Cases to support Grant in Aid funding applications for four coastal erosion and flood risk schemes on the Isle of Wight.  These schemes in the Sandown Bay, Bembridge and Ventor areas are part of a wider package of works across the island which are being delivered by the Environment Agency in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council.

The four projects will mitigate the increased risk from coastal erosion and flooding impacting these coastal communities and also ensure the ongoing integrity of the Internationally Designated environmental site.  The Ventnor scheme also incorporates options to mitigate the risks to the town which is situated in one the UK’s most critical areas for coastal landslides.

Strategic Outline Case

To date Strategic Outline Case appraisals have been prepared to confirm the case for change and explore potential scheme viability and funding requirements for each scheme.  This has been supported by a range of initial studies and assessments which will be further developed within subsequent project stages.  Assessment have included:

• Environmental and landscape assessments

• Long and short list option development and appraisal

• Coastal processes assessments

• Carbon assessments

• Stakeholder mapping and development of consultation plans

• Economic appraisal

• Preparation of Business Case following the 5 Case Model
